In the opening round of the ATP Adelaide 2, Tommy Paul defeated the challenging Christopher O’Connell, who was dangerous (in Australian conditions). He won convincingly, 6-4, 7-5, securing a break in each of the two sets and holding on to all of his service games. With victories over Taro Daniel and Benjamin Bonzi in the second rounds, the American participated in both ATP Adelaide legs in 2022 and advanced to the quarterfinals on both occasions. In fact, he had four quarterfinal finishes in his first four ATP events of the previous year and six more throughout the remainder of the year.
So far in 2023, Jack Draper has participated in three brief matches, winning two of them against Soon Woo Kwon and Lorenzo Sonego and losing one to Karen Khachanov. Each of the three matches was won in straight sets, and none of the six sets featured more than ten games. The British younger had a fantastic season as well in 2022 and eventually cracked the top 40. His performance was significantly impacted by maintaining physical fitness throughout the year, which also led to a drastically lower incidence of retirements in 2022—one as opposed to four the year before.
