Paris Masters 2022: Casper Ruud sees off Richard Gasquet after final set thriller

The Norwegian was matched in the service department by the Frenchman as they both scored six aces each.

Norwegian tennis sensation Casper Ruud was made to work hard for his 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) victory against Richard Gasquet in the second round of the 2022 Paris Masters. After winning the first set comfortably, Ruud was pushed to the limit by Gasquet who took the second set to a tie-break. The Norwegian was matched in the service department by the Frenchman as they both scored six aces each. He also returned three out of three break points and recorded win percentages of 85% and 63% respectively.

Ruud was very aggressive, not allowing his opponent to get into a rhythm as he attacked early and frequently. He blasted 11 winners in the first set and cruised to an easy victory. We saw a tiebreak in the second set, which was much more competitive. Gasquet squandered several early break points, which could have sent the match to a third set. Later in the match, he broke Ruud, taking a 5-3 lead and setting himself up to serve for the second set. He failed, and Ruud tied the game at 5-5.

They decided it in a tiebreak, in which Gasquet blew several more chances. He was up 4-1 at one point, but Ruud used his second match point to win the tiebreak 9-7. Gasquet made too many errors at crucial times.
