Oscar Otte and Pavel Kotov will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 26.
Oscar Otte put on a few strong performances in Munich’s high-altitude environment last week, and he’ll be hoping for more of the same in Madrid’s hospitable environment this week. By defeating Sebastian Baez in the first round, he earned his first top-50 victory of the year. Last week, he forced Flavio Cobolli into a decisive match in the second round. In the middle of the 2022 season, the German experienced his most successful period of his career, which had its beginnings during the European clay swing. In Belgrade and Munich, he achieved back-to-back quarterfinal finishes (or better), and in the months that followed, he built on those outstanding performances. He attained his career-high ranking of #36 as a result.
At the Madrid Masters, Pavel Kotov narrowly lost a three-set match to Yosuke Watanuki, but he will still be allowed to play in the main draw as a lucky loser. The Russian earned the little bit of luck he had in Madrid this week because he has improved his performances and results on the main tour during this clay swing. On the main tour, the world No. 101 recently finished in the semifinals on the clay courts in Marrakech earlier this year. After that, he qualified for the second round in Barcelona by winning three straight games.

0-0. Early in the match, Oscar Otte might have the upper hand; he stands the best chance of winning in straight sets. Otte has dropped a few three-set matches since having knee surgery, so Pavel Kotov might have the upper hand if this match goes the distance.
