Novak Djokovic, though yet to start his Paris Masters singles campaign, has had a hectic week. He attended the FIFA Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday and won a doubles match with Miomir Kecmanovic on Tuesday. Starting the season as world #5, Djokovic quickly reclaimed his world #1 status and now aims to maintain it, thwarting Carlos Alcaraz’s challenge at the Paris Masters and ATP Finals. Djokovic, the reigning US Open, French Open, and Australian Open champion, has lost just five matches in the 2023 season, potentially setting a personal record for fewest losses in a year (his previous best is six in 2003 and 2011). He has reached at least the final in his last four tournaments and aims to continue this impressive streak at the Paris Masters, where he is a six-time former champion holding numerous records.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming a set and a break deficit to defeat Novak Djokovic’s compatriot and current doubles partner, Miomir Kecmanovic, in the opening round of the Paris Masters. This win also marked his debut match at this venue. Notably, all four of Etcheverry’s indoor hard court matches this year have gone the distance. His first appearance at an indoor ATP event in 2023 was just last week in Basel, where he made a strong impression by reaching the quarterfinals, securing notable victories over Sebastian Korda and Andy Murray along the way.

Head to head

In their head-to-head, Novak Djokovic holds a 1-0 lead. Tomas Martin Etcheverry proved to be a challenging opponent for Djokovic during their previous encounter at the Rome Masters earlier this year, and he could once again present difficulties in the early rounds, especially considering Djokovic’s recent lack of match practice. Nevertheless, Djokovic’s extensive experience in handling such early-round challenges leads to the expectation that he will once more find a way to secure the victory.
