Novak Djokovic vs Karen Khachanov will take place in the quarter-final of the 2023 French Open on June 6.
Novak Djokovic’s usual surge in form during the second week of a grand slam, combined with the calibre of his opponent, led to a commanding 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory over Juan Pablo Varillas in the round of 16 at the French Open. In terms of the fewest games lost, this victory was Djokovic’s most impressive of the tournament. He only faced three breakpoints against the Peruvian, a significant improvement over the ten times he lost his serve in the previous three matches combined. Despite the fact that the French Open is his least favourite slam, the former world number one will play his 17th quarterfinal match on Tuesday. This breaks Rafael Nadal’s previous record of 16 quarterfinal appearances.
Karen Khachanov demonstrated the reasons for his impressive record in recent slams during the round of 16 at the French Open. While Sonego had an impressive and dominant start to the match, maintaining a high level of play throughout the second and third sets, it was Khachanov’s wealth of experience in major matches that allowed him to overcome the obstacles thrown his way. Although the 27-year-old’s recent slam performances have been commendable, they may not be lasting unless he can defeat top-ranked opponents and compete for titles. So far, he has struggled against top-10 players in slams, going 1-13 in such matches with the sole victory coming against Juan Martin Del Potro at the 2019 French Open.
