Novak Djokovic won consecutive clay court matches for the first time this year after defeating former world #3 Grigor Dimitrov in three sets in the third round of the Rome Masters. He has yet to deliver a convincing performance on clay as of 2023. With the French Open just around the corner, he’ll be looking to improve his game, gain crucial confidence, and gain momentum in Rome this week. The current world number one displayed dominant form in the early stages of the 2023 season, hinting at a potential undefeated season and a chance to complete the elusive calendar grand slam, which he narrowly missed a couple of seasons ago. His performance, however, abruptly deteriorated.

Cameron Norrie’s form in this European clay swing has also been poor. With only four wins in four tournaments, he has suffered defeats to Zhizhen Zhang, Lorenzo Musetti, and Francisco Cerundolo. The former Indian Wells Masters champion has only two wins on clay against top-5 players, both against top-seeded Dominic Thiem in Lyon 2021 and Carlos Alcaraz in Rio de Janeiro 2023.

Head to head

Novak Djokovic has a 2-0 lead. Cameron Norrie, as seen earlier this year during the South American clay swing, had the potential to pose significant challenges to Novak Djokovic in his current form. Unfortunately, Norrie hasn’t been performing at that level in recent weeks, and it’s unlikely that he’ll capitalise on the top seed’s current struggles.
