Novak Djokovic ends 2022 season as ATP player who earned the most prize money

The Serbian, who is currently ranked World No.5, rose to the top of the list thanks to a flawless performance at the Nitto ATP Finals, where he won all five of his matches, earning him approximately $4.7 million.

Novak Djokovic finished 2022 as the winner of the most prize money from ATP tour events this year. The Wimbledon champion surpassed World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz to top the money list with $9,934,582 in earnings for the year. The Serbian, who is currently ranked World No.5, rose to the top of the list thanks to a flawless performance at the Nitto ATP Finals, where he won all five of his matches, earning him approximately $4.7 million.

Victories at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome and his 21st Grand Slam at SW19 in July also contributed significantly to his final total. Alcaraz finished second to compatriot Rafael Nadal with $7,655,130 in tournament earnings, just over $200,000 more than his hero in third. Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas rounded out the top five, respectively. Djokovic’s achievement is remarkable given how his year began, when he was deported from Australia ahead of the Australian Open due to his Covid vaccination status.

Due to the same issues, he was also forced to miss the US Open and the North American swing. However, 2023 appears to be a big year for the former World No.1, with Tennis Australia’s Craig Tiley recently expressing his excitement at the prospect of Djokovic returning to Melbourne.

A memorable season

The Dubai Tennis Championships kicked off Novak Djokovic’s 2022 tennis season on February 21, 2022. He broke his previous record of 353 weeks as the ATP No. 1. He improved his record of 37 ATP Masters 1000 titles to 38, and the number of finals he reached increased from 54 to 56. 240 wins over top ten ranked players, breaking his previous record of 229 wins. He now has 31 grand slam first-round seedings, breaking his previous record of 28.

He has now reached 32 Grand Slam finals, breaking his previous record of 31 (tied with Federer). Became the first player in Grand Slam history to win 80 or more singles matches. Became the first player in ATP Masters 1000 history to win 30 or more singles matches. With six ATP Finals titles, he tied Federer for the most.
