Fabio Fognini vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Chile Open on Tuesday, February 28.
During his match against the world’s second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in Rio de Janeiro last week, Fabio Fognini provided a welcome reminder of his prowess on clay courts. He battled with the Spaniard in the opening set, winning it 7-6, and his fitness was the only thing that let him down in the following two sets, losing them both 7-6 2-6 4-6. The erratic Italian can still perform at a very high level, at least on clay, as was seen just a few days ago. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to be very motivated and frequently only performs at his best against opponents with the highest rankings who he is determined to beat.
Since the pandemic break, the career of the former world No. 9 has become disjointed. Given his impressive track record of more than 400 victories and eight tour-level titles on the surface, including a significant victory at the Monte Carlo Masters, it is surprising that he has only been able to win 21 matches on his favourite clay surface since the beginning of 2020.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry has competed in five tournaments so far in 2023, and in alternate events at the Australian Open last month and Buenos Aires two weeks ago, he has successfully progressed past the first round. The Argentine has played five matches during the current South American clay swing, and each match has gone the full distance. It’s interesting to note that while he lost the first set in all three of the matches he ultimately lost, he was able to win both of them.

0-0. Due to his exceptional skill set, tennis player Fabio Fognini falls into a higher category. However, his negative attitude and poor form are the only reasons he has been the underdog in the majority of his recent matches.
