Stefanos Tsitsipas is on a roll at the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters. With a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nicolas Jarry in the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 event on clay courts on Thursday, the champion for 2021 and 2022 extended his winning streak there to 12 games. On Court Rainier III, the second-seeded Tsitsipas defeated the World No. 58 Jarry in 93 minutes with a fortress performance. Tsitsipas qualified for the quarterfinals with just one break of the Chilean’s serve in each set. He won 80% (32/40) of the points behind his own first serve and avoided both break points he was presented with.

Jarry had won the pair’s lone previous head to head match on the grass of Hertogenbosch in 2019 despite the fact that Tsitsipas had a strong Monte Carlo record going into their match. The Greek was proud of himself for taking charge of a tense confrontation to prevent a repeat of that outcome.

“I had to deal with a few [tough] points, especially when he had break points,” reflected Tsitsipas. “I dealt with those situations very maturely and played precisely, so it was great out there. He’s someone that has had good results on clay, someone that can serve big as well,” added the Greek. “It was all sort of played in the small details, and I’m really happy that I pulled through and gave myself such a good ending to this match.”

Tsitsipas currently holds a 14-2 record in Monte Carlo and is getting ready for his quarterfinal matchup against eighth seed Taylor Fritz. The American battled hard to defeat Jiri Lehecka 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, and advance to the Principality’s quarterfinals for the second year in a row. With his victory over Stan Wawrinka in the second round, Fritz earned his 50th Masters 1000 victory. He is now 22-6 for the 2023 campaign. In the Friday quarterfinals, the World No. 10 will try to win against Tsitsipas for the first time in four matches at the tour level.

Medvedev beats Zverev, advances to last eight

In the third round of the Monte-Carlo Masters on Thursday, Daniil Medvedev triumphed 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7) after a thrilling late-night marathon match against Alexander Zverev. Zverev saved two match points in the third-set tie-break on Court Rainier III and held serve for the match at 5-4 in both the second and third sets, but he was unable to defeat the tenacious Medvedev. The outcome of a closely contested game, in which both players produced excellent play but found it difficult to do so consistently, was decided when Medvedev remained the more reliable in the dying seconds.

“That was a crazy match,” said Medvedev. “He served two times for the match, he probably should have done better, but that is also clay courts. I tried to watch a lot of tennis before playing this tournament, and one thing that I saw is you can come back at any moment. The serve doesn’t count as much, so as soon as someone gets a little bit tight, the match can turn around in one second. That’s what I managed to do.”

In the tie-break that decided the match, Medvedev fell behind 5/6 and 6/7, but Zverev’s mistakes cost the German dearly on both occasions. Medvedev scored three consecutive points to seal the victory and advance to the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals twice.
