For the first time since June 2022, John Millman won three straight matches to advance to this week’s second round in Adelaide. He obtained a three-set victory over Albert Ramos Vinolas in the opening round after dispatching of Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Christopher O’Connell in straight sets in the qualifying rounds. The seasoned Australian will now try to become the first player to win back-to-back matches in the main draw of a tour-level competition since Delray Beach in February 2022, when he beat players like Maxime Cressy and Marcos Giron to advance to the semifinal. Since the pandemic, he has had difficulty producing results at all levels, and he dropped out of the top 100 last year.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina needed a strong start to 2023 after a run of defeats in the final weeks of the 2022 campaign, and he got it this past week in Adelaide. Despite being the underdog from the beginning, he defeated Brandon Nakashima, the current ATP San Diego champion, 6-2, 7-6, without losing his serve. In the majority of the competitions he played in last year, the gifted Spaniard was eliminated early. But his one outstanding performance at the Monte Carlo Masters (F) propelled him to enter the top 30, and a few additional outstanding efforts later in the season helped him hold onto his position in the top 30.
