Matteo Arnaldi displayed his fighting spirit and determination once again in the ATP Umag quarterfinals against top-seed Jiri Lehecka. Despite facing setbacks in the first set, Arnaldi showcased resilience and made a comeback, highlighting his admirable qualities on the court. His progress over the past 20 months has been remarkable, climbing nearly 300 places in the ATP rankings since the beginning of 2022. Arnaldi’s adaptation to the main tour has been impressive, and he even achieved his first-ever win against a top-5 player by defeating Casper Ruud at the Madrid Masters. This year, he has consistently performed well, surpassing the opening-round challenge in six out of eight tournaments, and now looks forward to his first-ever appearance in the semifinals at this level.

Alexei Popyrin faced a challenging obstacle in the ATP Umag quarterfinals against Dino Prizmic, the reigning Boys’ French Open champion and wildcard entrant. Despite Prizmic’s strong fight and support from an enthusiastic crowd, the Australian displayed composure and secured a straight-set victory, winning 7-6, 7-5. Popyrin’s previous quarterfinal triumph on the main tour was against another wildcard entrant, Matthew Ebden, two years ago in Singapore, and he went on to win the title. While he had a forgettable season in 2022, his rebound in 2023 has been impressive, winning 16 main-draw matches in tour-level events and reaching two quarterfinals or better. This contrasts with his performance in 2022 when he won only five main-draw matches at this level, leading to a drop in the top 100 rankings.
