Marcos Giron and Nuno Borges will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 27.
Marcos Giron began his European clay season with a bang, reaching the quarterfinals in Munich last week. He upset the reigning ATP Marrakech champion, Roberto Carballes Baena, and staged a thrilling comeback to win a three-set match against the underdog Alexander Ritschard. Giron eventually lost in two close sets to Botic Van De Zandschulp, who went on to win the title. The 29-year-old American is set to compete in the main draw of the Madrid Masters for the second time after gaining confidence from his first-ever quarterfinal appearance in an ATP event on clay. He previously qualified for the main draw of this tournament in 2021 and upset Pablo Andujar.
Nuno Borges has been able to maintain a high level of performance at the Challenger level for the past four months. However, he has struggled to replicate this level of play on the main tour. This was evident in his recent appearance in Estoril, where he failed to capitalise on the opportunity to play in front of his home fans, losing in straight sets in the first round to Quentin Halys. The Portuguese number one made his Masters debut just a few weeks ago in Miami. However, he was unable to perform at his best due to exhaustion from the previous week’s challenging campaign at the Phoenix Challenger, where he emerged as champion.
