Mackenzie McDonald had two promising chances to win on clay and gain confidence for the rest of the clay swing, but he was unable to take advantage of them. He blew his chance against Ivan Gakhov in three sets at the Monte Carlo Masters and was defeated in straight sets by the less experienced Ben Shelton in Barcelona. The current clay swing has disrupted the American player’s form and momentum, and he must navigate this phase without causing significant damage to his confidence and ranking. Prior to the start of the European clay swing, he was 8-0 in first-round matches on the main tour this year.
Bernabe Zapata Miralles has not been able to replicate his success from the South American clay swing earlier this year in the European clay swing. However, his recent quarterfinal appearance in Estoril and second-round performance in Barcelona are still impressive, especially given his position a year ago.
This season has undoubtedly been the best of the Spaniard’s career on the main tour, and it’s no surprise that all of his achievements have come on his favourite surface, clay. He has reached back-to-back semifinals in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, defeating players such as Diego Schwartzman, Albert Ramos Vinolas, and Hubert Hurkacz.
