Lorenzo Sonego and Jan-Lennard Struff will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 27.
The win-loss record of Lorenzo Sonego in 2023 remains negative, but it does not accurately reflect his performance on the court. This year, he has been playing exceptionally well, and his losses have mostly come at the hands of top-tier players such as Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Hubert Hurkacz, Felix Auger Aliassime, and Jannik Sinner. The Italian has competed in all three Masters events held this season and has performed admirably, reaching the second round in two of them. His best performance came at the Miami Masters, where he advanced to the round of 16 and was one set away from the quarterfinals.
In 2023, Jan Lennard Struff has an impressive win-loss record of 28 wins and 12 losses, which is significantly better than his upcoming opponent, Lorenzo Sonego. It should be noted, however, that the majority of Struff’s victories came at the Challenger level. Despite this, the 33-year-old German has had a highly successful four months, as these victories have allowed him to revitalise his career and re-enter the top-70 group in the ATP rankings. So far this year, the German has only won five matches in the main draw of tour-level events, and it’s worth noting that all five of these victories have come at the Masters level.
