Liudmila Samsonova destroyed Jelena Ostapenko in the matchup of the top 20 seeds by saving both breakpoints and eliminating the former Roland-Garros champion in just under an hour, 6-2, 6-0. The Russian won over Maryna Zanevska, 6-2, 6-3, to begin her second season after losing in the first round of her Madrid debut the year before. She has only achieved back-to-back victories twice this season. She entered the top 20 last year after winning matches on hard courts in Washington, Cleveland, and Tokyo, but she fluctuated throughout the first three months of this year, at best finishing second in Abu Dhabi (wasting three championship points).
Irina-Camelia Begu was one of the select few who performed on Saturday with the roof closed. She came back from a set down to defeat similarly ranked Shelby Rogers, 7-5, 6-2, in just under two hours. This victory followed a straight-set victory over Karolina Muchova. She had not successfully completed the first round in Madrid prior to this past week. She has advanced to the round of 16 three times at the Madrid Open, turning the first two into quarterfinal finishes in 2015 and 2016. After reaching the third round in Charleston, the 32-year-old will be aiming to maintain her dominance on clay courts as she prepares for title runs in Palermo and the 125K Bucharest in 2022.
