Kvitova and Zheng are set to face each other in the first round of the 2023 Adelaide International 2 on Wednesday, January 11.
Petra Kvitova beat fellow Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-3, 7-5, winning 86% of her first serves in the process and securing a 3-0 start to the new season. She had, however, suffered a similar straight-set defeat to the Kazakh in their lone prior encounter in Ostrava a few months earlier. The Czech player was shocked by local wildcard Priscilla Hon in three sets when she competed in Adelaide last year, knocking her out in the first round. She has improved recently, reaching the Cincinnati final and the fourth round of the US Open in addition to sweeping Laura Siegemund and Jessica Pegula in the United Cup.
Zheng Qinwen is still having a fun-filled fortnight in Adelaide. The 20-year-old, who defeated Anastasia Potapova in three and a half hours (6-7, 7-5, 7-6), earned a spot in the main draw. Shelby Rogers forced her to come back from a set down twice, but the lucky loser was defeated 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. She beat former world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit in a third set tiebreak before falling to Victoria Azarenka in the second round before arriving in Adelaide last week. After three wins in the Melbourne Summer Series (semifinal), Toronto, and Tokyo of the previous season, the rising star is set to compete in her fourth WTA quarterfinal (final).

The two are set to face each other for the first time. Zheng Qinwen, who was ranked nearly 100 spots lower at this time last year, has won seven of her last ten matches against top-20 players. Two of those defeats were at the hands of Iga Swiatek. Petra Kvitova, the runner-up at the 2019 Australian Open, has not lost a set yet in 2023, but she could soon encounter her toughest test.
