In Adelaide, Veronika Kudermetova’s first week as a top 10 singles player was a mixed bag. Despite resounding victories in straight sets over opponents like Amanda Anisimova and Bianca Andreescu (winning both second sets 6-0), she was defeated by Irina-Camelia Begu in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-4. She just finished a season in which she never lost her rhythm, including in doubles, where she is the world’s second-ranked player and the WTA Finals champion. She has competed in 21 campaigns since the beginning of 2022, winning multiple games in 15, and reaching finals in Melbourne Summer Set, Istanbul, and Dubai.
Victoria Azarenka also travelled to Adelaide with the goal of competing in two WTA 500 tournaments. She defeated Anhelina Kalinina last week with a score of 7-6, 7-6 (saving five set points in the first set), and Zheng Qinwen with a score of 6-2, 7-5 before falling to eventual finalist and 18-year-old qualifier Linda Noskova in the quarterfinals with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 7-6. The Belarusian has now advanced to Adelaide’s quarterfinals twice. She reached the WTA 500 tournament’s semifinals last year as well, but she didn’t advance any further in the season until Washington, DC, in August. She had a strong year-end, reaching the fourth round of the US Open and the semifinals of the Guadalajara 1000.

Veronika Kudermetova has a 1-0 advantage. In Dubai’s opening round in February 2022, they came face to face. The Russian defeated Victoria Azarenka, a participant in the final of that competition in 2010, in straight sets and went on to compete in the final. She should anticipate a more intense struggle from the former Australian Open champion there.
