JJ Wolf vs Yoshihito Nishioka will take place in the first round of the 2023 French Open on May 30.
Jeffrey John Wolf won his first tour-level tournaments outside of North America shortly before the start of this year’s Australian Open. This valuable experience, combined with the confidence he gained from those victories, undoubtedly aided his outstanding performance in Melbourne. During their intense match for a spot in the quarterfinals, he held a one-set advantage over fellow countryman Ben Shelton on two occasions. The American recently accomplished a similar feat just prior to the start of the French Open, and it will be interesting to see if it helps him win the clay court Grand Slam.
Yoshihito Nishioka’s preparations for the French Open have been less than ideal, as he has lost eight of his last ten matches on various surfaces. Furthermore, he is currently on a three-match losing streak on clay courts. In contrast, he did well leading up to the Australian Open, reaching the semifinals in Adelaide. He built on that momentum by winning three straight matches in Melbourne, all in straight sets. On paper, the Japanese’s opening-round win-loss record of three wins and three losses at the French Open may appear average. It is worth noting, however, that the majority of his matches in Paris have been against top players.

Yoshihito Nishioka has a 1-0 lead. Given Nishioka’s game style and previous experience playing and winning matches at the French Open, the conditions in Paris are likely to suit him better. However, given his current poor form during this year’s clay swing, Jeffrey John Wolf has a fair chance to compete against him.
