Jiri Lehecka and Alexander Shevchenko will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
Jiri Lehecka lost to Miomir Kecmanovic in his most recent match last week in Banja Luka, but it was still a successful outing for him as he bageled Radu Albot and defeated Gael Monfils in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals. He hasn’t yet had a significant impact at the Masters level this year, but he has shown steady improvement with each outing. He advanced to the second round of the Indian Wells Masters, the third round of the Miami Masters, and just one win kept him out of the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals.
In the first four months of 2023, Alexander Shevchenko has also made significant progress, winning a total of 22 matches at all levels, including two Challenger titles. The 22-year-old recently made his debut in the top 100 rankings and attained his career-best ranking of #96 as a result of his impressive performances. Shevchenko’s performance on the main tour this year has been very encouraging given his relative inexperience at this level. In Dubai two months ago, he presented Hubert Hurkacz with a formidable challenge. Since then, he has managed to advance to the second round in back-to-back competitions, including Barcelona (R2) last week and the Madrid Masters (R2*) this week.
