Jelena Ostapenko and Liudmila Samsonova will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
Jelena Ostapenko won her third career title at the Madrid Open, defeating 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova 6-0, 6-3 in 61 minutes, with only one break in the second set. It’s a positive result in a tournament where she’s lost three of her last five matches in the first round and two in the second. The former Roland-Garros champion, who went 1-3 in clay-court tournaments last year, arrived in Madrid with mixed results. She reached the Australian Open quarterfinals, her best slam result in four and a half years, but she has not won multiple matches in six of her last nine tournaments.
Liudmila Samsonova won six of nine return games to defeat Maryna Zanevska 6-2, 6-3. After losing to Barbora Krejcikova in Stuttgart, this is her first clay-court victory of the season. The world No. 18 has advanced to the third round of a tournament in which she lost in the first round to Petra Martic a year ago. The Russian is also struggling with his form this season. After defeating Veronika Kudermetova and Barbora Krejcikova, she may have cruised into the WTA 500 final in Abu Dhabi. She did not, however, win multiple matches in any of her other eight campaigns. Her season win-loss record outside of Abu Dhabi was 4-8 entering this week.
