Jan-Lennard Struff vs Ben Shelton will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
With a dominant performance against Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round, Jan Lennard Struff made the most of his second chance at the Madrid Masters, winning 6-3, 6-1. After suffering an unexpected loss to the underdog Aslan Karatsev in the final qualifying round, he was forced to rely on a lucky loser spot to guarantee his place in the main draw this week. The German had only succeeded in making it past the first round on three occasions on the main tour so far this year, all of which happened at the Masters level, prior to this week. He advanced to the second round at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters, and later made an impression by reaching the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters.
Ben Shelton’s performance in the current clay swing is noteworthy even though he was unable to match his impressive win total from the latter half of 2022 or the early part of 2023. It is especially impressive in light of the fact that, up until a month ago, he had never played on European clay. During the clay swing, the 2023 Australian Open quarterfinalist managed to advance to the second round in Estoril and Barcelona. In addition, he fought valiantly against more seasoned rivals like Grigor Dimitrov and Casper Ruud.
