Irina-Camelia Begu defeated Karolina Muchova in a battle of former quarterfinalists, snapping a three-match losing streak in Madrid. She was broken once in each set, but she created 10 breakpoints in return and converted four of them to defeat the Czech, 6-4, 7-5, for the second time on clay. The 32-year-old has reached the tournament’s last-16 stage three times (consecutively) and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2015 and 2016. On clay, she is still a tough opponent. Last year, she won 20 matches on the dirt, including titles in Palermo and 125K Bucharest, as well as a fourth-round appearance in Paris.
Shelby Rogers went 0-2 in the first round of the Madrid Open, losing in straight sets to Ashleigh Barty in 2021 and Yulia Putintseva in 2022. She arrived in Madrid as a seeded player with a bye and defeated world no. 61 Ana Bogdan, 6-2, 6-2, with a nearly 80% first-serve win rate. Despite being a Roland-Garros quarterfinalist in 2016, the 30-year-old has rarely been regarded as a serious threat on European clay courts. She went 2-4 on the surface last year and has only made two round-of-16 appearances on dirt in the last six years, both in the Strasbourg 250 in 2017 and 2021.

Shelby Rogers has a 2-1 lead. The American won in straight sets at Roland-Garros in 2016 and Indian Wells in 2021. She was a set and a break up in Adelaide in January, but she was defeated 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 in two and a half hours. Both are coming off third-round finishes in Charleston, and another close scoreline is possible.
