Irina-Camelia Begu and Karolina Muchova will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 27.
Karolina Muchova defeated Anett Kontaveit, 6-2, 6-2, to maintain her perfect record in the first rounds of the Madrid Open and against the Estonian. She is competing in her first tournament since her successful Sunshine Swing, which ended in the third round (as a qualifier) in Miami. The Czech had dropped out of the top 200 the previous season after being sidelined for six months by a lingering abdominal injury. She’s nearly back in the top 50 after storming into the quarterfinals in Auckland, Dubai, and Indian Wells, and she’s hoping for a similar result in Madrid, where she’s a 2021 quarterfinalist.
Irina-Camelia Begu began the clay-court season with a solid performance in Charleston. For the second year in a row, she defeated Dalma Galfi and Sofia Kenin to advance to the third round of that tournament. It was her second back-to-back victory of the season, and her first since reaching the WTA 500 semifinals in Adelaide. She reached the Madrid Open quarterfinals in 2015 and 2016. However, in her last three visits, the 32-year-old has been knocked out in the first round, including by Belinda Bencic last year. Having said that, the 2022 season was a good year for the Romanian in terms of clay-court results, with titles in Palermo and 125k Bucharest.
