Throughout the 2023 season, Hubert Hurkacz has consistently relied on tiebreakers, even on slower clay surfaces. As a result, it was no surprise that he needed two tiebreakers to avoid defeat against the relatively inexperienced Yosuke Watanuki in the second round of ATP Stuttgart this week (after a first-round bye). Despite struggling for most of the match to find effective responses to Watanuki’s dominant serve, Hurkacz’s status as a top-20 player emerged in crucial moments, 4-6 7-6 7-6. Hubert Hurkacz has only made it past the first round of a grass tournament twice since the start of the 2021 season. Surprisingly, he achieved impressive results on both occasions, reaching at least the semifinals and winning the title in Halle.
Christopher O’Connell arrived in Stuttgart on the heels of a three-match losing streak. He did, however, show an impressive turnaround by winning straight sets over Daniel Altmaier and the in-form Lorenzo Sonego. Christopher O’Connell’s impressive run to the quarterfinals in Stuttgart adds to his outstanding season on the main tour. Prior to 2023, he had only twice reached the quarterfinals at this level. However, in just six months, he has amassed five quarterfinal appearances, and his record at this stage in 2023 is currently 1-3.
