Fabian Marozsan’s debut campaign on the main tour continues to exceed expectations with each match. He has already accomplished remarkable feats, such as two first-set bagels against Timofey Skatov in the first qualifying round and Corentin Moutet in the first round. Furthermore, Marozsan won his first-ever match against a top-50 player in the second round, defeating Jiri Lehecka. Most recently, he defeated world number two and tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the third round. Before his match against Ben Shelton at the Cagliari Challenger a few weeks ago, the world #135 had never faced a top-50 player. However, he has now won with apparent ease a stunning victory over the world number two, Carlos Alcaraz. Prior to this week, only three players ranked outside the top 100 (Nick Kyrgios, Denis Shapovalov, and Tim Van Rijthoven) had ever won their first match against a top two opponent.
Borna Coric advanced to the round of 16 at the Rome Masters, his second appearance in seven attempts and his first since 2019. He qualified by defeating the reigning ATP Marrakech champion, Roberto Carballes Baena. Coric faced Roger Federer in the round of 16 of the 2019 tournament, ultimately losing in a thrilling three-set match. Interestingly, that was Federer’s final appearance in Rome. If it hadn’t been for Carlos Alcaraz, the top-ranked Croatian could have won his second Masters title just a few days ago in Madrid. As a result, he would have been among the happiest people when Fabian Maroszan defeated the Spaniard in the third round. The Croatian had his best season result with an impressive run to the semifinals in Madrid, where he was defeated in straight sets by Carlos Alcaraz.
