Elise Mertens vs Mayar Sherif will take place in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on May 1.
Due to the rain, Elise Mertens’ third-round match was played under cover. She defeated Wimbledon quarterfinalist and world No. 67 Jule Niemeier, 6-3, 6-4. She had lost to Mirjam Bjorklund in the first round when she arrived in Madrid, but she rebounded by defeating Rebecca Marino, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round. The Belgian, who skipped Rome and Madrid in 2018, reached the quarterfinals of the Spanish capital’s tennis tournament in 2021 after defeating Simona Halep and Elena Rybakina. In a recovery season that includes a semifinal in Monterrey, a fourth round in Miami, and a third round in Melbourne, she will be eager to match her past performances.
Mayar Sherif defeated world No. 5 Caroline Garcia 7-6, 6-3, coming back from a break down in the first set and facing no breakpoints in the second. This victory was probably the biggest shock of the tournament so far. She previously defeated seventh-ranked Maria Sakkari on the dirt of Parma, and this is her second and biggest top 10 victory. The Egyptian, who frequently trains in Spain, barely registered in the first three months of this season, adding to her problems on hard courts. She is a completely different player on clay courts, though, as evidenced by her three 125K titles and her first WTA title run in Parma the previous season.
