During the fight with Lesia Tsurenko, Daria Kasatkina broke three bones, but it wasn’t an insurmountable obstacle. In an hour and a half, she defeated the Ukrainian, 6-4, 6-2, to follow up her success over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. In her seven visits to Madrid, she has now won back-to-back games three times. She defeated Garbine Muguruza in the 2018 last-16 to advance to the quarterfinals in Madrid. Despite winning championships in San Jose and Granby, the Russian hasn’t had a great eight months. From the Australian Open to Miami, she only managed to win three matches, and the dry spell was broken by a semifinal appearance in Charleston.
After leading her countrywoman Anastasia Potapova by one set and 5-2, Veronika Kudermetova was forced into a decisive set. With no breakpoints encountered in the final set, she defeated the teenager in nearly three hours, winning 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 to tie her best Madrid Open performance from 2021. After surviving a fight with qualifier Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, she has now spent almost five and a half hours on courts for just two matches. However, she would not mind the effort given that she arrived in Madrid with just one victory in her previous five competitions, including three losses in the first round.
