Danielle Collins and Jelena Ostapenko will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2023 WTA Abu Dhabi Open on February 6.
After losing to Elena Rybakina in the third round of the Australian Open, Danielle Collins dropped out of the Top 11 and into position 40. She had won in gruelling three sets against Anna Kalinskaya and Karolina Muchova while defending runner-up points that fortnight, but she was unable to do the same against the eventual winner, losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. The American is about to begin her fourth campaign of the 2023 season after being limited to a maximum of 11 tournaments last year. She is still a strong player and has achieved multiple victories in five of her most recent tournaments, helping her advance to the semifinals in San Diego, Adelaide, and the US Open’s fourth round.
In the opening rounds of her two Adelaide tournaments, Jelena Ostapenko was defeated by Irina-Camelia Begu and Anna Kalinskaya, a slow start to the 2023 season. She then proceeded to win in straight sets over Coco Gauff and Dayana Yastremska to advance to her first-ever quarterfinal at a major since the 2018 Wimbledon. She had a fantastic month of February the previous year. The Latvian had a strong run in the Middle East, winning a WTA 500 title in Dubai and reaching the semifinals in Doha after reaching the semifinals in St. Petersburg. In Dubai, she overcame set deficits to defeat Iga Swiatek, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep; in Doha, she defeated Garbine Muguruza and Barbora Krejcikova.
