Daniel Altmaier vs Borna Coric will take place in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Madrid Open on May 3.
The latest Daniel Altmaier campaign at the Madrid Masters appeared to be headed for nowhere, but it ended with the best result of his career. He entered the main draw as a lucky loser, replacing Pablo Carreno Busta, after losing cheaply to the underdog Jurij Rodionov in the final qualifying round last week. Since then, he hasn’t dropped a set, easily defeating Oscar Otte, Yannick Hanfmann, and Jaume Munar. The current world #92 has made it to the quarterfinals of a Masters tournament despite not having played any players in the top 80. With this outstanding achievement, he becomes the first unfortunate loser since Miomir Kecmanovic in the 2019 Indian Wells Masters to advance to this stage of a Masters competition.
Before competing in the Madrid Masters last week, Borna Coric was underperforming and lacking in self-assurance. With an outstanding performance, he was able to turn things around and revive his season, making it to the quarterfinals. He beat world No. 35 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a tough three-set match and world No. 15 Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals. At a younger age, the top-ranked Croatian had already surpassed Daniel Altmaier’s accomplishments in this competition. He was a lucky loser who advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2017 Madrid Masters before losing 1-6, 4-6 to Dominic Thiem, a player with a higher ranking.
