Coco Gauff vs Paula Badosa will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
Coco Gauff did not play her best tennis as she began her third consecutive Madrid campaign against Irene Burillo Escorihuela, a local qualifier. The teenager, who reached the third round last year after losing in the first round in 2021, trailed the world No. 318 twice in the first set but eventually won 6-4, 6-1. While she couldn’t win more than one match in her last two tournaments, the American is having a similar season to last year. The 2022 Roland-Garros finalist won her third career title in Auckland and advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open, the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, and the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Open.
Paula Badosa defeated world No. 50 Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in two and a half hours with the help of a sizable home crowd. During the game, she called the physio for a left calf injury. In the deciding set, the former world No. 2 saved all five breakpoints while converting only one of six. Having been ranked in the top four as recently as October, the Spaniard has fallen outside the top 40 following a period of poor form and injury issues; she was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open due to a right thigh injury. She appears to have found her stride in this clay-court swing, reaching the quarterfinals in Charleston and Stuttgart.
