In just two sets, Casper Ruud’s performance at the Rome Masters last week went from promising to disastrous. He started the semifinal match against fellow Scandinavian competitor Holger Rune in complete command. Ruud had a 7-6 4-2 lead at one point, but he lost his cool and ended up dropping the match in three sets. Nine of his ten championships on the professional tour came from ATP 250 clay-court events. In addition, he has won two championships right here in Geneva, where he has an undefeated 8-0 record. He took part in this competition in 2021 and 2022, and remarkably, he only dropped two sets the entire time.
In a setting he is still unfamiliar with, Jeffrey John Wolf is steadily gaining useful experience on European clay. At the Madrid Masters last month, he participated in his first-ever main-draw match on European clay, and at the recently finished Rome Masters, he won his first match in this situation. The American has competed in eight matches on clay so far this year, and each of them was won in straight sets. He triumphed in five of those contests. His notable successes on this surface include making it to the Houston quarterfinals and the third round of the Rome Masters.
