The recent performance of Cameron Norrie is concerning as he has dropped four of his last five games, including shocking straight-set losses to underdogs like Gregoire Barrere at the Miami Masters and Francisco Cerundolo at the Monte Carlo Masters. He need not worry, though, as he went through a similar phase in the second half of 2021 and was able to turn things around by competing in back-to-back finals at the Indian Wells Masters and San Diego, which ultimately led to the best season of his career. At the Madrid Masters in 2022, he had a successful opening round, winning matches against Soon Woo Kwon and John Isner before facing eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16. Additionally, this was his best effort ever in a clay-surfaced Masters competition.
Yosuke Watanuki, a qualifier, defeated Corentin Moutet, who had just returned from injury, in the opening round to earn his third straight victory of the Madrid Masters campaign. His two prior wins in the first round of a major tournament this year came in prestigious competitions at the Australian Open and Miami Masters. He was, however, eliminated in the second round of both of those matches, falling to Sebastian Korda and Frances Tiafoe, respectively. The gifted Japanese lost both of his previous matches against top-20 players, but to his credit, he gave both contests a good effort. He forced tiebreakers against Milos Raonic in Tokyo back in 2018 and Frances Tiafoe in Miami this year despite losing in three sets.
