Bernabe Zapata Miralles vs Vitaliy Sachko will take place in the first round of the 2023 Geneva Open on May 22.
If Bernabe Zapata Miralles stays in good physical shape and maintains the consistent level of performance he has shown throughout the majority of the 2023 season thus far, the ATP 250 events that take place in the week before a slam present new opportunities. The Spanish player has a special connection to this city because it was here, during the 2018 edition of the competition, that he won his first-ever match in the ATP main draw. He easily defeated Florian Mayer in straight sets to pull off this feat.
During his debut season in 2022, Vitaliy Sachko experienced disappointment in the ATP Geneva final qualifying round. This year, he was successful in reversing the situation. He defeated Ilya Marchenko and Alessandro Giannessi with identical scores of 7-5, 6-2 to earn a spot in the main draw. This is the first time at this level that the Ukrainian has qualified for the main draw on his own merit. He had previously been a lucky loser who was allowed to play in the main draw at the Vienna 2020 and Kitzbuhel 2022 competitions. Sachko was unfortunately unable to advance past the first round on both occasions, losing in straight sets to Dominic Thiem and Dusan Lajovic, respectively.
