For the time being in 2023, Benjamin Bonzi has excelled in alternate outings. He travelled a long way to Australia after falling short of winning his first ATP title in Pune, and it showed in his disappointing three-set loss to Robin Haase in the opening round of the ATP Adelaide. The following week, he defeated Pablo Carreno Busta at the Australian Open before falling to Zsombor Piros in the Davis Cup final in straight sets. The Frenchman has recently faced difficulties, mostly in the area of fitness, but he can still be proud of the advancements he has made on the main tour since the beginning of 2022. He exudes a lot of confidence and is currently ranked at his highest ever position of #42.

Even though Lorenzo Sonego has only played in three games so far in 2023, his performances have been encouraging, especially in light of how poorly he played throughout most of 2022. In the opening round of the ATP Adelaide tournament, he gave Daniil Medvedev some trouble. At the Australian Open, he had chances to defeat Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets. The Italian entered 2022 with high expectations after finishing 2021 as high as #21 in the ATP rankings, but he was unable to live up to them. He was able to save the year, though, thanks to a few strong performances in the second half, including a victory in a French indoor championship in Metz and a 2-0 Davis Cup record (defeated Denis Shapovalov and Frances Tiafoe).

Head to head

1-0 in favour of Benjamin Bonzi (6-3 6-4 at Indian Wells Masters 2022). If they had met in February of last year’s main tour, Lorenzo Sonego would have been the favourite, but the Frenchman has since improved and plays with newfound confidence, giving him a fair chance this time.
