Irina-Camelia Begu finished her 2022 campaign in September, a little earlier than usual, but still with a bang. She continued her excellent clay-court form after finishing in the fourth round at Roland-Garros in May by winning titles in Palermo (her first WTA title since July 2017) and 125K Bucharest. Regarding hard courts, there wasn’t much to see. Only two of her 10 victories on the surface came after the month of March. The 32-year-old Australian upset top seed and world no. 18 Jessica Pegula in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the Melbourne Summer Set.

She defeated Veronika Kudermetova and Johanna Konta in 2021, and Maria Sakkari—the world’s sixth-ranked player—in 2022. (two of her seven career top 10 wins have come in Australia). The American is coming off of an odd year in which she lost 10 of her 19 tournaments in the first round, but on her better days, she advanced to the San Jose final and the’s-Hertogenbosch semifinals. After defeating Yuan Yue and Kimberly Birrell in straight sets in the qualifying rounds, she won’t be going home empty-handed this week.
