Despite being broken a few times, Barbora Krejcikova defeated Wang Xiyu with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory to continue her best Madrid Open run. She won the doubles championship at the same competition two years prior, but up until a few days ago, when she defeated Danka Kovinic, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, she had never claimed a singles victory. This season, she has an unfair 1-6 record in round-of-16 matches, losing the last three to Aryna Sabalenka and five other top-10 players. Nevertheless, since the beginning of September, she has advanced to three quarterfinals and enigmatically given each event a title: Ostrava, Tallinn, and Dubai 1000.
Petra Martic has won her first two main draw matches on clay this season, but only after being put to the test on both occasions. After failing to hold serve twice in the opening set, she defeated qualifier Laura Siegemund, 7-6, 6-3. She then defeated Anna Kalinskaya, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, who had earlier defeated Elena Rybakina. She has played in Madrid’s main draw six times, but this is the first time she has had multiple completed victories in a single game. She did reach the quarterfinals four years ago, but only with the aid of a walkover and a retirement. Following her second-place finish in Linz in February, she is aiming for her second quarterfinal of the year.
