Canadian tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime will begin his 2023 campaign with a match against Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the 2023 Adelaide International 1 on Monday. Auger Aliassime had a very successful season in 2022, and some of the accomplishments he made during the year must have relieved him of a lot of stress. He was able to reach as high as sixth in the ATP rankings and earn a spot in the ATP Finals for the first time thanks to consistent performances throughout the year. Midway through the 2022 season, the Canadian struggled a little on clay and grass but performed to his full potential at the beginning and end of the year. In those 11 months, he won four ATP championships and assisted Canada in taking home two team trophies at the ATP Cup and Davis Cup.
To guarantee his spot in the main draw of the ATP Adelaide tournament this week, Alexei Popyrin defeated Zhizhen Zhang and Yibing Wu. He participated in this tournament’s main draw once in 2020, losing to Laslo Djere in the first round in three sets. The Australian’s 2022 campaign was a major letdown after he won his first ATP championship in 2021 and peaked at position #59 in November of that same year. He only advanced past the first round of five main-draw matches in tour-level competitions last year, dropping out of the top 100.
