Aslan Karatsev and Laslo Djere will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 Madrid Open on April 27.
Aslan Karatsev, who was on the verge of securing a seeded position in the Madrid Masters main draw just a year ago, now faces the challenge of having to qualify for the main draw due to his struggles over the last ten months, which resulted in a significant drop in his rankings. The former world number 14 had a strong qualifying campaign in Madrid, winning a set 6-0 against Raul Brancaccio and dispatching Jan Lennard Struff in straight sets. He also got a bagel against Robin Haase in the QR1 last week in Munich, where he beat Daniel Altmaier in the first round for his first main-draw win since ATP Pune.
Laslo Djere reached the quarterfinals of the ATP Banja Luka last week, but he may have been disappointed with his performance given that he had a good chance to advance further. In the quarterfinals, he faced Alex Molcan, and despite a close match, Djere was defeated in three sets. This year, the 27-year-old has reached the quarterfinals on clay twice, once in Santiago and once in Banja Luka. He has also advanced past the first round in four of the five clay tournaments he has competed in over the last four months. In fact, he could have easily gone 5-0 in the first round on clay this year.
