Aryna Sabalenka vs Mirra Andreeva will take place in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on May 1.
After being broken three times during the challenging match, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Camila Osorio, 6-4, 7-5, under the roof on the centre court. She has now won two matches in a row to avenge a loss to Sorana Cirstea in Miami earlier this week. She has now recorded 25 victories and four losses this season.
The Belarusian won the title in 2021, her only victory on clay courts to date, and that was the only time she had ever advanced past the first round. That was in Madrid. She has a strong winning streak going this season after making at least a quarterfinal in each of her previous six competitions, including her first Grand Slam victory in Melbourne.
On her 16th birthday, Mirra Andreeva improved her professional season win-loss record to 16-0 and advanced into the round of 16. Mirra Andreeva has continued to stir up trouble in Caja Magica. The Australian Open junior finalist this year defeated the 17th seed Magda Linette, 6-3, 6-3, in just her second WTA campaign. Prior to this tournament, the junior world No. 3 had never defeated a player ranked in the top 100, despite having recently won her two biggest professional titles at W60 Chiasso and Bellinzona on Swiss clay. Leylah Fernandez and Beatriz Haddad Maia, the 13th seed, were both defeated by her in straight sets as she fully utilised her wildcard.
