Andy Murray and Andrea Vavassori will take on each other in the first round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 27.
Andy Murray changed his strategy last year, skipping the entire European clay season in order to focus on his preparation and fitness for the grass season. After a four-year absence, he made a triumphant return at the Madrid Masters, defeating Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov. He was forced to withdraw from his round of 16 match against Novak Djokovic. The 35-year-old recently made his first appearance at the Monte Carlo Masters since 2017 and lost in the first round to Alex de Minaur, 1-6 3-6. This was also his first clay court match since the Madrid Masters last year.
Andrea Vavassori’s dedication and hard work have paid off, as he has shown consistent improvement in the singles discipline since the start of 2022. His efforts were rewarded with a quarterfinal appearance on the main tour earlier this month in Marrakech. As a qualifier, he won four straight matches, including an impressive victory over the in-form Nicolas Jarry. However, his winning streak came to an end in the quarterfinals when he faced Dan Evans, a former British number one. It’s worth noting that the Italian has won all 18 of his races this year on clay. Before entering the Madrid Masters qualifying rounds, he had an impressive record of four consecutive quarterfinal appearances or better on clay at all levels.
