Alex de Minaur and Marco Cecchinato will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
Everyone was surprised by Alex de Minaur’s unlikely run to the ATP 500 semifinals in Barcelona last year. He had to defend those points this month, which seemed difficult given his lacklustre performance on clay courts. However, he was fortunate in Barcelona, where he received a walkover from Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 16 and faced the inexperienced Alexander Shevchenko in the opening match. This allowed him to recover the majority of his points with little effort. The Australian No. 1 recently won the Acapulco 500 tournament, giving him his first victory above the ATP 250 level. His next task is to make an impact at the Masters level competitions.
Marco Cecchinato qualified for the Masters events for the first time this year and advanced to the second round by winning three straight matches, including one against Marton Fucsovics in the first round. His previous two tournament appearances in 2019 and 2021 resulted in first-round exits, so this is also his best performance in the competition. During his recent performance in Estoril earlier this month, the former French Open semifinalist ended his dismal run of form and gained some essential momentum. For the first time since Umag 2022, he won three straight ATP main draw matches during the course of the week, and he advanced to the semifinals.

At a 3-3 tie, the Italian leads 3-0 on clay. It’s clear from their head-to-head history that Marco Cecchinato can compete with Alex de Minaur on clay. To have a chance of beating the Australian, he must perform at his best the entire match, which has been difficult for him in the past when facing opponents with higher rankings.
