2023 Adelaide International 1: Three women's players to watch out for in the season opener

The first tennis competition on the 2023 ATP Tour and 2023 WTA Tour is the 2023 Adelaide International 1. It is a joint ATP Tour 250 and WTA 500 competition held in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, on outdoor hard courts. For the women, this is the third iteration of the competition, while for the men, it is the second. The competition will be held from January 1–8, 2023, at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre. A week later, the same location will host the 2023 Adelaide International 2, an ATP Tour 250 and WTA 250 tournament. The preliminary rounds will take place on December 31, 2022.

The tournament will be a precursor to the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open which is scheduled to commence on January 16. The two editions of the Adelaide International will play out over the course of a couple of weeks. The first one is set to begin on the first day of the new year and end on January 8. The second will commence from January 9 and end on January 14. Here are some key players to look out for in the WTA Adelaide International 1.

Ons Jabeur

Jabeur created history in 2022 when she became the first-ever Arab and African women’s player to lift a WTA 1000 title after she won the Madrid Open. The Tunisian has won three WTA Tour titles in her career so far, two of which came in 2022. Jabeur also became the first Arab and African player to reach the final of a Grand Slam this year as she finished runner up in both Wimbledon and US Open. The world no. 2 will be looking to start her season on a positive note. At 28, she is in the prime of her career and will be hoping to make the most of it and become the top rated women’s tennis player in 2023.

Aryna Sabalenka

Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka might not have had a season to remember when it comes to trophies, but she certainly has played some eye-catching tennis in the past year. Sabalenka ended her year strongly as she reached the finals of the WTA Finals where she lost to Caroline Garcia. She was impressive in the US Open as well where she made it all the way to the last four. The Belarusian also made to the final of the Libema Open and was eliminated in the fourth and third rounds of the Australian Open and French Open respectively. Seeded second in Adelaide, she will be hoping to go the distance to build momentum ahead of the first Grand Slam of 2023.

Daria Kasatkina

The Russian finished the season ranked eighth in the world with two WTA Tour titles to her name. At just 25, Daria Kasatkina has won eight titles already, the latest being the 2022 Granby National Bank Championships and the 2022 Silicon Valley Classic. Kasatkina will be hoping to start her 2023 campaign on a high and deliver a strong performance at the Adelaide International 1.
