Swimming is among the few sports that has appeared at every Summer Olympic Games. After athletics, it holds the second-highest number of competitions. Contests were held in open water during the first four Olympic Games rather than in swimming pools. Due to the establishment of the regulatory body FINA, the 1904 Olympic Games was the first one to ever be measured in yards instead of the usual metres. For the 1908 Olympics, a 100-meter pool was constructed. Electrical timing was first used at the Stockholm Harbor Olympics in 1912.
Two swimmers from each country may qualify for the Games if both meet the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT or “A” cut). If a country only has one swimmer who meets the OQT, only that swimmer will be eligible. One swimmer from a nation will compete in an event through the Olympic Consideration Time (OCT or “B” cut) if no other swimmers from the nation have reached the OQT.
