Wales will take on Cook Islands in the Rugby World Cup on October 19 at Leigh Sports Village (Leigh). The Wales first two World Cup games have been characterized by a sluggish start and a quick conclusion. In their debut match against Australia, they found it difficult to get going for the first 20 minutes before completely dominating their opponents. It was the same story in their 56-12 victory over Wales on Sunday in Waitakere. Their assault was fluent for the remaining 60 minutes; they were able to locate a lot of space on the edges, utilize it well, and build the score to secure their place in the quarterfinals.
The first 20 minutes, though, raised more questions. Handling mistakes caused their assault to fizzle out in the first 15 minutes, maybe guilty of attempting to do too much before earning the right to, while problems with the scrum and discipline allowed Wales to escape their own half and put the Wales defense to the test. As was the case last weekend, after the Black Ferns scored, everything seemed to come together. They handled the pressure superbly and fended off every effort the Welsh team launched at them.
The Wales were able to get rolling thanks to halfback Ariana Bayler’s clever play to take advantage of a defender who had fired off of the line early and won an offside penalty. They peppered the Welsh line by kicking to the corner and performing a solid lineout. Wales persisted in holding onto the ball and working hard, and in the 18th minute, lock Chelsea Bremner crashed over from close range after prop Tanya Kalounivale was eventually stopped from crossing the line.
