They now face a French team, who were beaten by New Zealand in the opening game
New Zealand will take on Cook Islands in another match of the Rugby World Cup on November 6 at York Community Stadium. Australia produced brilliant rugby as they knocked out huge winners against the Cook Islands in their Women’s Rugby World Cup opener. The Jillaroos scored 74 points while keeping their opponents from scoring as they made their mark for the rest of the competition. They now face a French team, who were beaten by New Zealand in the opening game and although they showed some spirit in that game, another heavy defeat is on the cards here with Australia can accept -64.
French flyer Caroline Drouin missed a last-minute penalty as defending champions New Zealand thrashed 25-24 in the classic at Eden Park on Saturday and staged the World final Women’s Rugby Cup with England. With a shot on target up front after Santo Taumata was shown a yellow card for a high tackle, Drouin hit a last-minute kick on the left as Black Ferns eased down into the screaming crowd. The home side took the lead thanks to the efforts of Ruby Tui and Theresa Fitzpatrick and was well placed as France beat a woman with a yellow card due to the negligence of striker Safi N’Diaye in the 70th minute. No 8 Romane Menager scored twice in a powerful performance, dragging the French to a point with 14 minutes left.

France inside center Gabrielle Vernier refused to blame Drouin, saying the team could have won sooner. “We’re very proud of ourselves today,” she said. “We should have played better the whole game, we should have defended better.” France finally conceded a goal after Drouin kicked the full ball after half an hour of play, sending New Zealand into a frenzy. Semi-finalist Ruahei Demant throws the ball to Stacey Fluhler, who swings near the left corner to ignite the crowd. Full-back Renee Holmes’ conversion leveled the game at 10-10 but the Frenchman was back, with Vernier breaking through from the left post at half-time.
