The Sea Eagles’ hopes of making it to the finals were dashed on Sunday at the Gold Coast, so they must find a way to recover before taking against the Sharks at 4 Pines Park. After beating Newcastle in Round 18, the Sea Eagles appeared to be in excellent condition. However, they have now lost four straight games for the first time since the first month of the 2021 season, and they are currently four points outside the top eight.

They take on a calm and disciplined Sharks team that is well and fully in control of a top-four spot with games against Manly, Bulldogs, and Knights still to come. The team of Craig Fitzgibbon is playing a style of football that is ideal for high-stakes playoff games, and they have every reason to think that winning a second championship in seven years is a distinct possibility.

Team news

Due to Andrew Davey’s injury, the Sea Eagles made another change on Friday, inserting Ethan Bullemor into the starting lineup and Kurt de Luis onto the bench. That comes after Reuben Garrick’s season-ending shoulder injury was announced. Tolu Koula, who had been selected to play the wing in place of Jason Saab because of his withdrawal, will now switch to fullback, and Alfred Smalley, who has been called up for his second NRL game, will shift to the wing. Dylan Walker is inserted in place of Jake Trbojevic (hand) at the lock.

For Sharks, Kade Dykes, a rookie fullback, was replaced at the 24-hour update on Friday due to a calf injury, with Lachlan Miller moving to fullback and Matt Ikuvalu entering the side on the wing. Braydon Trindall will sit in for injured backup forward Teig Wilton on the bench. Both Matt Moylan and Connor Tracey are expected to make a full recovery from their injuries. Braden Hamlin-Uele replaces Andrew Fifita in the starting lineup because Toby Rudolf, who has a torn medial, will be out for a month. Inactive due to a shoulder injury is center Siosifa Talakai.
