World number eight Tyrrell Hatton became the latest player to withdraw from this week’s Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida on the back of a positive Covid-19 test, the PGA Tour said on Tuesday. The Abu Dhabi champion will now join Sepp Straka, Will Gordon and Brice Garnett in missing the tournament after testing positive for coronavirus. Hatton was among the top players in this week’s field at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead course.

He finished in a share of eighth place at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event with 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett. Hatton will undoubtedly be a big miss for the tournament. “Hatton will have the PGA Tour’s full support throughout his self-isolation period under CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines,” the PGA Tour said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Tyrrell Hatton wrote on twitter, “Sadly I have had to withdraw this week from the @ValsparChamp after testing positive for COVID-19 today.” He added, “I will now be self isolating under the CDC guidelines. I wish everyone well this week and look forward to being back out on tour soon.”

Earlier withdrawals

Previously, Sepp Straka had withdrawn from the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook after testing positive for the coronavirus. Straka was the third player to test positive this week.

A PGA TOUR statement on Sepp Straka read, “PGA TOUR member Sepp Straka has withdrawn from the Valspar Championship after testing positive for COVID-19.”

“Straka will have the PGA TOUR’s full support throughout his self-isolation period under CDC guidelines. Straka is replaced in the field by first alternate Nelson Ledesma.”

Prior to that Will Gordon and Brice Garnett withdrew after a positive test on Monday. A PGA TOUR Statement read, “Gordon is replaced in the field by J.J. Spaun and Tim Wilkinson replaces Garnett.”

This is the fourth PGA Tour event since golf resumed in June. Among those competing this week at Innisbrook are world number one Dustin Johnson and world number two Justin Thomas.

On the European Tour, Will Besseling of The Netherlands had earlier tested positive for COVID-19. He has withdrawn from this week’s Tenerife Open.
