Tokyo Paralympics: Indian archer Jyoti Balyan finishes 15th in women’s compound Individual open ranking round

Jyoti Baliyan finished the Women's Individual Compound Ranking round at the 15th Position with 671 Points, recording her season's best performance.

Indian archer Jyoti Balyan finished 15th out of 24 in the Women’s Individual Compound- Open Ranking Round of the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics. She scored 58 in her last set of arrows and achieved her season’s best score of 671. Over the years, the Indian has gone on to become one of the top female para-athletes in the world. She was part of the seventh Fazza Para Archery Tournament in Dubai, which had the world’s top 10 archers back in February, 2021.

China’s Lin Yueshan started brightly with 60 points, while Jyoti scored 56 points to place herself at the 13th spot. After 18 of 72 arrows, the Indian got better as she moved to the 11th spot with 168 points. After Round 6, Jyoti was placed at the 13th spot. She had three sets of 56 followed by a couple of 55s. Russian Paralympic Committee archer Stepanida Artakhinova was placed on top of the table.

Jyoti was consistent with her gameplan as she got a 56 and 55 to her name, but the other archers were scoring better with 57s. Stepanida broke the Paralympic record with a score of 694 to finish on top of the table.

The Indian was consistent through the qualification round with 55s and 56s. Towards the end, she even scored 57 and 58 to finish at the 15th spot. The final flourish should boost Jyoti’s confidence going ahead.

Bhavina Patel qualifies for the quarter-finals

Indian paddler Bhavina Patel has reached the quarterfinals of the women’s singles, class 4 event in the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics. She is the first player in the sport from the nation to reach the quarterfinals in an edition of the Paralympics. Bhavina defeated Brazil’s Joyce de Oliveira who is ranked 8th in the world rankings, in straight sets to record a comprehensive win by a 12-10, 13-11 & 11-6 margin.

While Joyce kicked off the opening game with a lead picking up points at regular intervals, the Indian paddler made a comeback to close the gap down to 7-7. Egged on by her enthusiastic coach, Bhavina battled it out in a superb 22-shot rally in the first game. The Brazilian took a lead from 7-7, with two game points making it 9-7. Bhavina continued to fight it out, increasing the scoreline to 9-9 before saving a game point. With momentum in her favour, the Indian paddler sealed the first game 12-10 having been down 9-10 at one stage.

In the second game also the Indian held her nerve as she saved three game points to level the score at 10-10 before pulling off a 13-11 win. Bhavina needed to win one more game to clinch the match and she did just that. Joyce looked down on confidence and the Indian won the third game comfortably at 11-6, thereby ensuring qualification to the quarter-finals.
