Earlier last month, two members of Uganda’s Olympics team tested positive for COVID-19. While one tested positive at the Narita airport, the second tested positive in the team’s base city in Izumisano.

Kyodo news reported that the rower tested positive after an antigen test conducted at the airport quarantine station. The rower has been isolated. Four teammates of his were designated as close contacts. They are not placed in isolation and will face hard quarantine near the airport.

The rowers were supposed to travel to their host city Nanto, Toyama Prefecture, for a training camp till July 18.

Thousands of athletes, coaches and officials coming from around the world to participate in the games have heightened fears of another wave of infections sweeping the country.

When the Uganda team tested positive,

Public broadcaster NHK said the group had all been vaccinated and tested negative in Uganda. The team was originally due to have arrived in Japan on June 16. But their flight was canceled following a surge in Covid-19.

The other members of the Ugandan party have already left the airport for Osaka, western Japan. They will train ahead of the Games. “I heard the person has been isolated based on regulations”, Hidemasa Nakamura, the Tokyo 2020 Games delivery officer, told reporters. Japan has pledged to take a lot of strict measures against the virus, including strict regulations that each country has to follow.
