India smashed the Asian record in the men’s 4x400m relay race, but missed out on automatic qualification. They were less than a second off the qualifying pace as Netherlands and Italy (from the other Heat 1) finish as the fastest non-automatic qualifier.

The relay team consisted of Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv, Nirmal Tom Noah and Muhammed Anas Yahiya. They put up a very good fight, narrowly missing out on qualification. India was drawn in Heat 2. Poland, Jamaica and Belgium went through from the heat into the next round.

On the other side in heat 2, World record holders USA, Botswana, and Trinidad and Tobago secured automatic qualification. Meanwhile, Italy and Netherlands qualified as the other two fastest teams from both the heats.

India completed its race in 3:00.25 – a new Asian record – just short off the next fastest team in Belgium (2:59.37). They missed by 0.88 seconds after an intensely fought 4x400m relay.

After the first round of the heat, Muhammed Anas finished last and he was lagging behind. Nirmal Noah was the 2nd on the runners’ list and he pulled the team back in the race taking them to 6th before handing over the baton to Arokya Rajiv. Rajiv did an excellent pull and overtook the French team pushing India to 5th and handed over the baton to Amoj Jacob. Amoj had a huge task in his hands but he missed out on the big qualification by a whisker. He overtook the Japanese and pushed Indian rankings to 4th in the heat but they fell short and agonisingly missed out on the finals.
